Georges Bizet tenía diecisiete años y aún era alumno del Conservatorio de París cuando escribió esta sinfonía, en el otoño de 1855. La guardó en una gaveta y jamás la escuchó: la partitura durmió ochenta años hasta su estreno en Basilea, en 1935. El Scherzo conserva intacta esa alegría de quien compone sin saber que alguien lo oirá. Las cuerdas se lanzan con un impulso de danza, y en el trío el mismo tema regresa sobre un bordón grave, como una gaita de aldea que se cuela en la sala de conciertos. La juventud, aquí, es una forma de claridad. He put it away in a drawer and never heard it: the score slept for eighty years until its premiere in Basel in 1935. The Scherzo keeps intact the joy of someone composing without knowing anyone will ever listen. The strings leap forward with the drive of a dance, and in the trio the same theme returns over a low drone, like a village bagpipe slipping into the concert hall. Youth, here, is a form of clarity.
