In barely a month he wrote this symphony, almost as a classroom exercise, and set it aside. He never heard it played. Eighty years passed before Felix Weingartner premiered it in Basel in 1935, revealing what that student had achieved without even trying. The first movement opens with chords that surge forward with a confidence astonishing for his age. Soon the oboe introduces a second theme of almost vocal tenderness, an early glimpse of the composer of Carmen. The entire Allegro vivo breathes certainty: that of someone who already knew what he wanted to say. Recorded live on September 13, 2026, at the Sala Sinfónica of the Centro de Bellas Artes in Santurce, Puerto Rico, during "El prodigio de la música," the inaugural concert of the Borinquen Sinfonietta under the baton of Emanuel Olivieri.
