📹What if sport doesn’t become your career? What if it becomes something much bigger? For Vinit Madkaikar, cricket began like it does for so many young Indian boys—with a ball, a bat and an irresistible desire to keep playing. But following that passion wasn’t always easy. With both his parents working, Vinit had to find his own way to practice. He travelled by ST bus to the Nehru Stadium, made sure he reached training on time, managed his nutrition, kept up with his studies—and then, after formal practice ended, would squeeze in a little more cricket with his friends in the yard behind the stadium. He played cricket for more than 26 years, eventually representing Pune at the state level and playing numerous league matches. He didn’t make cricket his profession. But cricket made him who he is. In the early years, when he could only get to the ground a few times a week, Vinit would spend hours doing shadow practice alone in his room at night. The same movement. The same shot. Again and again. It taught him something that has stayed with him long after he stopped playing competitively: You don’t need to be motivated to do the work. You need to be disciplined enough to do it anyway. That lesson became a way of life. Cricket taught him teamwork—the understanding that the team’s goal sometimes matters more than individual success. It taught him adaptability. An opening batsman might be asked to bat down the order because that’s what the team needs. And when that happens, you put your ego aside and play your role. It taught him integrity, sportsmanship and the importance of doing things right even when nobody is watching. And then there was one lesson his coach repeated: The match isn’t over till the last ball is bowled. More than a decade ago, Vinit found yoga while working on his body for cricket. It gave him another lesson—adaptability. He speaks about water taking the shape of whatever container it is placed in. Perhaps life asks us to do the same. Adapt. Find your shape. Stay calm. Keep moving. Today, Vinit sees how dramatically the sporting landscape has changed. A generation ago, parents often struggled to imagine sport as a viable career. Today, Indian athletes have helped make that possibility far more visible. But his story also reminds us that sport doesn’t have to become your profession to become one of the most valuable investments you make in yourself. Because the real returns may not be medals. They may be discipline. Teamwork. Adaptability. Focus. Resilience. Integrity. And the ability to keep going until the very last ball. Motivation is momentary. Discipline is what creates mastery.
