When fortune teller Agnes Huston, known professionally as Madame Astra, is found strangled in her shabby flat above a fairground, the police investigation becomes a labyrinth of conflicting testimony. Five witnesses—her landlady, her sister, a neighbour, a spurned suitor, and a petty criminal—each describe a completely different woman, filtered through their own biases, resentments, and desires. One paints her as refined and gentle; another as coarse and vicious. One brands her friend Bob Baker a murderous brute; another sees him as a tragic romantic. As the inspector pieces together these contradictory accounts, the truth about Agnes’s character—and her killer—slowly emerges from the fragments of their memories. Directed by Anthony Asquith and written by John Cresswell and Joseph Janni, this 88-minute British noir unfolds with a Rashomon-like structure, predating Kurosawa’s classic by several months. Jean Kent delivers a tour-de-force performance, transforming her character to match each witness’s perception, while Dirk Bogarde brings volatile intensity to one of his early roles. A gripping study of truth, memory, and the stories we tell about the dead.
