Should you choose Civil Engineering after Matric or FSc?
In this detailed career-guidance video, Engr. Adeel Jaffer explains what Civil Engineering actually is, how it differs from fields such as Computer Science and Electrical Engineering, who should choose it, what the job market looks like, and how AI may change the profession in the coming years.
This video is especially for Matric and FSc students who are preparing university merit lists and trying to decide which engineering discipline fits their interests, personality and long-term career goals.
In this video, we discuss:
• What Civil Engineering is
• What civil engineers actually do
• Major areas within Civil Engineering
• Civil Engineering vs Computer Science
• Civil Engineering vs Electrical Engineering
• Who should choose Civil Engineering
• Skills and personality traits that help in this profession
• Importance of communication and dealing with people
• Office work vs site work
• Career opportunities after graduation
• Job market and private-sector opportunities
• Consulting, contracting and construction careers
• Structures, geotechnical, transportation, water and project management
• Entrepreneurship and starting your own engineering / construction business
• Civil Engineering opportunities in Pakistan and abroad
• Future of Civil Engineering in the AI era
• Which engineering tasks AI may automate
• Why professional judgment, responsibility and site execution still matter
• Why I personally chose Civil Engineering
• Whether Civil Engineering should be included in your university merit list
WHO SHOULD CHOOSE CIVIL ENGINEERING?
Civil Engineering can be a strong option for students who enjoy mathematics, physics, design, construction, infrastructure and solving real-world physical problems.
It can also suit students who are comfortable dealing with people.
A civil engineer may interact with labour, contractors, architects, clients, consultants, vendors, government departments and senior decision-makers. Technical knowledge is important, but communication, leadership and practical judgment also matter.
Students should also understand that many Civil Engineering careers are not completely desk-based. Depending on your role, site visits, construction coordination and field responsibility can become an important part of professional life.
CIVIL ENGINEERING VS COMPUTER SCIENCE & ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING
These are different professions rather than better or worse versions of each other.
Computer Science largely focuses on software, computing and digital systems.
Electrical Engineering deals with electrical, electronics, power and related systems.
Civil Engineering focuses on the built environment — buildings, foundations, roads, bridges, water systems and infrastructure.
Your decision should depend on the type of problems you genuinely want to solve during your career.
WHAT ABOUT AI?
AI will change Civil Engineering, just as software and digital tools have already changed drafting, structural analysis, estimation, planning and project management.
However, buildings and infrastructure still have to be designed responsibly, coordinated with real site conditions and physically constructed.
Civil engineers will increasingly use AI as a tool, while engineering judgment, accountability, site coordination, communication and decision-making will continue to matter.
This video is useful for:
• Matric students
• FSc Pre-Engineering students
• A-Level students considering engineering
• Students preparing university merit lists
• Parents helping students choose a career
• Students comparing Civil Engineering with CS
• Students comparing Civil and Electrical Engineering
• Anyone considering a career in construction and infrastructure
This is Part 1 of the student career-guidance series.
In the next video, we will discuss which universities you should consider for Civil Engineering once you have decided that this is the field you want to pursue.
