Why don't protons repel each other in the nucleus? NuclearVerse Ep 14 explains. Two protons, both positive, squeezed closer than a trillionth of a millimetre. They should blast apart. So why doesn't every nucleus explode? In this episode we measure the push between two protons (about 230 newtons, like holding a 23 kg suitcase), check whether gravity can help (it is about 10^36 times too weak), and meet the strong nuclear force: roughly 100 times stronger than the electric push up close, but almost gone a few femtometres away. Then we see why neutrons are the glue that adds grip without adding push, why lead-208 needs 126 neutrons, and why uranium can't fully hold itself together. ⚛️ A new NuclearVerse episode every day.
