Chandrashekhar Azad was one of the most prominent revolutionaries of India's freedom struggle. Born in 1906, he became known for his determination, courage and commitment to resisting British rule.
In this System Decode documentary, we explore Azad's journey from his early life in Bhavra, Madhya Pradesh, to his involvement in the Non-Cooperation Movement as a teenager. We also look at the famous court incident that led to him adopting the name "Azad."
After the Non-Cooperation Movement was withdrawn, Azad became associated with revolutionary organizations and underground resistance. The documentary examines his connection with the Hindustan Republican Association, the Kakori case, and the later transformation of the organization into the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA).
We also explore Azad's association with revolutionaries including Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru, and the revolutionary activities that made him one of the British authorities' most wanted Indian revolutionaries.
The story reaches its final chapter at Alfred Park in Allahabad, where Azad was surrounded by British police on 27 February 1931. He fought the encounter and, according to the historical accounts of the event, died after using his last bullet rather than being captured alive.
From a teenager who called himself "Az ad" in court to a revolutionary who became a symbol of resistance, this is the story of Chandrashekhar Azad, his revolutionary journey and his place in India's freedom struggle.
Watch till the end to understand the life, revolutionary activities and historical legacy of Chandrashekhar Azad.
