The BMW iceberg starts with grilles and heated seat subscriptions. By the time you reach the bottom layer, it stops being a story about cars at all.
Every brand keeps a version of itself it would prefer you remembered. BMW's version is the roundel, the straight six, the driver's car that never needed to apologise for anything. This video works downward through the other version. Nine layers, ordered by how much they actually cost, not by when they happened.
The top of the BMW iceberg is the part the internet already argues about. Oversized kidney grilles. Features you own but have to rent. Below that, the engineering bill nobody put on a brochure: the N63 and what it did to warranty costs, a braking system recall that no amount of software could engineer away, and a residual value problem that quietly became part of the business model.
Then it gets structural. China stopped buying, and BMW's most profitable market became its biggest exposure. Before that, there was Rover, bought for roughly £800 million and sold for a token £10. Before that, an emissions case in Brussels that ended with fines and an uncomfortable question about what the German car industry agreed on behind closed doors.
The last layers of the BMW iceberg are not business decisions at all. A 1959 shareholders' revolt that stopped Daimler-Benz absorbing the company and accidentally created the modern BMW. The Quandt family record. And BMW's own wartime use of forced labour, which the company itself has documented.
I have kept those last two strands factually separate, because they are separate, and the difference matters.
By the end, the propeller story on the badge looks different too.
