Bob Dylan’s “Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat”: Sexy or Sleazy? In this Bob Dylan reaction & analysis, I explore the meaning of “Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat,” the provocative Blonde on Blonde song about sex, jealousy, fashion, infidelity—and possibly the changing sexual freedom of women in the 1960s. Is “Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat” simply Bob Dylan being funny? Or is something much more uncomfortable happening? In this episode of Music Found Me, I analyze Bob Dylan’s lyrics from a woman’s perspective and ask whether Dylan is mocking a sexually liberated woman whom he himself desired. Because that's the contradiction I can't get past. He pursues her. He wants her. And then he humiliates her. Dylan seems fascinated by this woman, her sexuality, her fashionable leopard-skin pillbox hat and the other men surrounding her. But instead of simply walking away, he turns the entire situation into a song. And what a song. Funny. Fun-Loving. Sexy. Jealous. Sarcastic. Bluesy. And maybe just a little Cruel? Is “Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat” about sexual liberation? This is where my analysis takes a different turn. Bob Dylan recorded “Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat” during a period of enormous cultural change in the 1960s. Fashion, birth control, casual sex and changing expectations for women were beginning to collide with older ideas about how women were supposed to behave. So when Dylan ridicules this woman and her lovers, I find myself wondering: Is the woman actually the joke—or is Dylan's reaction to her telling us something about him? In this Bob Dylan analysis, I explore: 🎵 Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat meaning and lyrics And that leads me to the question behind this entire episode: Sexy or sleazy? Maybe it's both. 0:00 Unpacking the Subtext of Dylan's Lyrics 2:22 The Iconic Leopard Skin Pillbox Hat 4:04 Was Edie Sedgwick the Muse? 9:26 Dissecting the Opening Verses 14:09 Contraception and Sexual Metaphors 21:42 The Doctor and the Sexual Revolution “Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat” appears on Bob Dylan's landmark 1966 album Blonde on Blonde. It's easy to hear it as a hilarious and charming blues number—and it is. But listening as a woman makes me hear another layer. Dylan isn't observing this woman from a safe distance. He's implicated. That's what makes the song so fascinating to analyze more than half a century later. I'm not arguing that Dylan wrote a women's liberation song, nor am I trying to impose today's attitudes onto 1966. I'm asking: What happens when we stop listening only to Dylan's joke and look at the woman standing inside it? I think she deserves at least that. 🎧 MUSIC FOUND ME I'm Millie.
