After Hattin, Saladin rapidly captured much of the Kingdom of Jerusalem before turning his attention to the holy city itself. Jerusalem surrendered on October 2, 1187, after negotiations between Saladin and its defenders. The fall of Jerusalem was a major turning point in the history of the Crusades and prompted the launch of the Third Crusade in Europe.
