Our whisky scene is brimming with enthused and dedicated followers; whisky botherers, geeks, students and fans - those who care. They make for fascinating, welcoming and knowledgeable spaces to enjoy and share this amazing spirit. Happily, some of them also work in whisky too. That’s what this series is intended to expose; just how many of them are at the helm of the products, brands and businesses we love most. It’s even more reassuring when some of those invested individuals make it their mission to keep things fun and accessible too. This week, we’ll be asking one of whisky’s most laid back pilots, Little Brown Dog founder Andrew Smith, to step forward and share what he loves from our five tried-and-tested categories. How someone can pivot from a pretty great, hard-earned career to throw every focus in a whisky direction is interesting enough, but every other discussion I've had with Andrew Smith ends up in some space of whisky fascination. While we meander through the chitty-chat of such things, we’ll be asking him what’s the best value pick he likes to keep on hand - his Permashelf Pour, then his chosen Crowd Pleaser where he needs to keep everyone happy. We’ll then ask him to consider his own, personal downtime selection where it’s just him and the glass - his Decadent Pour, before discovering what he might pour to impress a whisky geek in his VIP Pour. As always, we’ll ask him to round out on an Attention Grabber, the type of whisky that draws polite discussion to a close and has everyone just staring into the glass. It can be loud and shouty, or just utterly compelling. The choices for all will be his alone. I can pretty much guarantee a perfect place to gather at whisky’s side and revel in all it offers.
