In 2025, one of the biggest snack companies in the world announced it was
putting up to twenty percent more chips in the bag. Same bag. Same price.
Companies do not usually give things away, so something had happened.
What had happened was that enough people had opened a bag, looked inside, and
decided they had been robbed.
This is what is actually going on in that bag. Why it is not full of air.
Why the chips are always at the bottom. How much space is "enough" — and
which brand measured at fifty-nine percent. Why the can had to give up the
potato to get rid of the air. And the part that is genuinely strange: the
weight is printed on the front of every bag, nobody reads it, and the reason
has nothing to do with laziness. Your eyes measure in inches. The label
speaks in ounces. Shrinkflation lives in the gap between them.

Figures in this video: a 2018 measurement of fourteen chip brands bought off
the shelf (average forty-three percent air); nitrogen flushing as described by
the snack-packaging industry; and a snack company's own 2025 announcement
that it would add up to twenty percent more chips to select bags at the same
price.
