Farming and Climate Change: Measuring Success | Patrick Holden and Adele Jones

We stand at a critical moment in history for food and farming. During the last century, our extractive farming practices have contributed to the depletion of nature and brought us to the brink of a planetary emergency, resulting in climate change, catastrophic biodiversity decline and a crisis for public health. With half of our land now used for agriculture, farmers across the globe have become the primary stewards of nature, climate and health. Yet their delivery of public goods requires redesigning our businesses and industries away from systems based on extraction and growth and towards approaches based on the principles of regeneration, sustainability and the circular economy. During this talk, Patrick Holden (CEO) and Adele Jones (Deputy CEO), of the Sustainable Food Trust introduce the Global Farm Metric. Giving a tour of his farm, Patrick, Chair of the GFM steering committee, begins by sharing his practices as a dairy farmer and the growing need to measure his impacts on the environment and local community. Adele, Director of the Global Farm Metric project, follows by explaining more about the project. Noting the current degree of overlap between farm audits, Adele explains that a harmonised measure of on-farm sustainability would not only save farmers time, money and effort, but create a common language of agricultural sustainability across the globe.
