Cristiano Ronaldo has now told his side. In a statement published on the 6th of October, he says Jorge Jesus "failed to keep his word" — and he had warned everyone exactly what would happen a week before he walked out.
On the 23rd of September 2026, sitting next to his new national team coach, Ronaldo was asked if this Nations League was the moment to start handing over to younger strikers. His answer was precise: if the coach doesn't count on him, he can leave that day, or the president too. "I grab my bag, and I go."
Four days later in Oslo he was sent to warm up in the second half, kept warming up, and never came on, the first time since Euro 2008 he had been an unused substitute in a competitive match for Portugal. In his statement, Ronaldo says the coach had asked him that day if he was fit to play thirty minutes. Two days later they met, with Al-Nassr sporting director Simão Coutinho, and agreed what the coach would say in public. The meeting, Ronaldo writes, ended with the coach asking him for a hug. Then came the press conference, and Ronaldo left the camp in Copenhagen.
This video traces the whole route: Jesus joining Al-Nassr "because of Cristiano's invitation", benching him in a cup tie two months later, the Saudi title, the World Cup, Jesus's unveiling ("when I thought he shouldn't play, he didn't"), the night in Qatar in 2022 when the same striker replaced him, and Ronaldo's own account of the 30 minutes he was promised in Oslo, the meeting that ended in a hug, and the press conference that broke the deal.
So did Jorge Jesus keep his word? Or did the coach who owed Ronaldo the most just end the international career of the greatest player Portugal has ever had?
