WHAT IS CERTAIN, AND WHAT IS NOT
The royal capital of King Kassapa I (reigned 477-495 CE) and the site's features come from UNESCO and the Sri Lanka Central Cultural Fund. The family drama, the exile of Moggallana and the king's end come from later chronicles, and the king's exact motives are interpreted in different ways. The identity of the painted figures in the frescoes is also debated. Sources spell the king's name Kassapa or Kashyapa. Historical photographs shown are labelled. Narration describes the rock as about 180 m high (UNESCO).
