WE NEVER CLOSE [Intro — a bell rings; organ, prowling bass, then punchy guitar] [Isabella — solo female lead; warmly welcoming] [Verse 1 — brisk, elegant, conversational] Reception’s just beneath the stairs. Please sign the book and take a seat. If something followed you inside, We’ll need its name before we treat. The porter used to guard a crypt. Three hundred years without a break. We brought him home, removed the chains. He’s wonderful with frightened patients. Please don’t mind his face. That’s simply how it stayed. He’ll carry you quite gently If your courage starts to fade. [Pre-Chorus — organ rises beneath the drums] Hear the footsteps down the passage? See the light beneath the door? Someone’s always here to help you. That’s what all the screaming’s for. [Chorus — bright, enormous, slightly ominous] TWENTY-FOUR, SEVEN, THREE-SIXTY-FIVE! Somebody’s here to keep you alive! Ring the bell. Come inside. Leave the dreadful night outside. There’s a bed. There’s a light. There are hands to set things right. From your head down to your toes— Darling, we never close! [Verse 2 — cheerful tour continues] The nurse who’s floating through the wall Was bound beneath a ruined keep. They made her wail until the dawn. Now she helps the sick children sleep. The skeletons beside the linen Came from underneath a throne. Their former master called them worthless. They run this ward on their own. We’ve rescued quite a few from dungeons. Such a waste of willing hands. A little kindness, clean surroundings— And work that doesn’t mean Protecting some dead tyrant’s plans. [Pre-Chorus — bass climbs] Yes, that cupboard moves at midnight. Yes, those eyes are watching you. That’s the night attendant, darling. Do wave back. It's okay to introduce yourself. [Chorus — full guitars, gleaming organ] TWENTY-FOUR, SEVEN, THREE-SIXTY-FIVE! Somebody’s here to keep you alive! Through the storm. Through the snow. Bring us everyone you know. If you faint along the way, Someone’s there to catch your weight. Though his fingers may be cold— Darling, we never close! [Verse 4 — music darkens; Isabella remains pleasant] Beyond these doors, the windows rattle. Something scratches at the frame. That room is for removing curses. Please don’t answer If it calls your name. You may hear voices from the basement. You may see shapes beneath the screen. Some procedures need a little privacy. We keep that corridor quite clean. And if a sheet sits up beside you, Let the nearest nurse attend. It may be someone feeling better. It may be something That requires tucking in again. [Bridge — instruments fall to piano and a low heartbeat drum] Oh. Set the stretcher down. No, darling. You needn’t apologize. You carried him through all that rain. You brought him here. Now dry your eyes. Let me see. [Pause] Yes, I know you felt no heartbeat. But it's going to be okay [Build — organ and guitar swell] People hear the footsteps. People see the bones. People whisper dreadful things About the lights that guide them home. But when the knocking comes at midnight, And there’s someone bleeding through— They’re very glad The dead are here To help the living through. [Final Chorus — triumphant, warm, theatrical] TWENTY-FOUR, SEVEN, THREE-SIXTY-FIVE! Somebody’s here to keep you alive! Lift the latch. Light the stair. Bring them in. We’re ready here. Clean the wound. Warm the bed. Let me hear what happened next. There is hope behind these doors— Darling, we never close! TWENTY-FOUR, SEVEN, THREE-SIXTY-FIVE! And if you didn’t quite arrive alive— Don’t assume That ends your stay. I’ve been known To find another way. [Outro — music settles into a pleasant organ phrase] [break- dramatic organ final notes]
