At your request, here is Adrian's version of what happened at the Dark Lord's Castle that day. Family Tree:    • Запись   Disasters and Shenanigans CHRONOLOGICAL:    • Disasters and Shenanigans Chronological St...   Disasters and Shenanigans: Featuring the Vanes, Save the Princess, and more    • Disasters and Shenanigans   YOU COULD HAVE JUST LET ME LEAVE [Verse 1] He sent me sixty letters. I ignored every one Then the latest bore a promise In his very finest hand: “If you cannot spare an evening, I shall visit you instead. Meet your friends and your instructors. Bring Every portrait of you. Extras too. So I went to stop a spectacle. [Pre-Chorus — drums build] I hadn’t asked for company. But my friends followed me. I told them this was personal. Then the trumpets started playing. [sarcastically] Oh, look, Father's Announcing my return. [Chorus] You didn’t need to call the generals! You could have let me reach the door! Why are there more chains on it than before? I came because you threatened me! I stood there through your speech! Dad… stop embarrassing me! YOU COULD HAVE JUST LET ME LEAVE! [Verse 2] He welcomed home his “little knight.” He asked if I’d outgrown my "holy phase." He told them how I dressed in black And frightened neighbors in those days. He asked if I was eating. He invited my friends to stay. He mentioned that my room was still the same. I began to back away. I thanked him for his interest. Said we ought to beat the rain. His smile grew rather wide. As the locks fell into place. [Pre-Chorus] His generals blocked the doorway. I told them, “Let us through.” My father rose. He drew his sword. I wish I were inventing What he chose to do. [spoken] “If you want to leave, You’ll have to kill me.” [dramatically] Father. This isn’t how parents behave. [Chorus] YOU COULD HAVE JUST LET US LEAVE! Did you really just bar the doors? Now you’ve got Finn drawing arrows And Simon crouching on the floor! They heard a threat! You called it a challenge! You look delighted beyond belief! You keep saying that we came to fight you— YOU COULD HAVE JUST LET US LEAVE! [Verse 3] A bat flew past Finn. He put an arrow through the chandelier. Then apologized for shooting While attempting to escape. Clarissa took her opening, Exactly like her books. Thomas held the center. Kept his shield against the blows, But he had to heal the others— Simon wouldn’t face The shadows moving on their own. I called for them to pull together. Father praised my clear command. Then he sent a flame between us. [Pre-Chorus- half-time] “Watch his hands!” “Stay close!” “Don’t chase him!” “And you! Stop provoking them!” Father laughed and changed the torchlight for some phase two ambience! He thought we needed More encouragement. We needed An unlocked exit. YOU COULD HAVE JUST LET US LEAVE! Now You’re explaining how to beat you While undoing every opening we’ve made! Stop correcting how I’m standing! Stop announcing you’re impressed! And stop calling me your little treasure WHEN I’M TRYING TO GET MY FRIENDS THROUGH THIS! [Bridge] They don’t know you. They hear the title. See the throne. They think a wrong step means they die. And you’re not trying to convince them Otherwise- Did you think I brought my friends For some quality torment? Thomas couldn't hold the line anymore. Finn’s hands had lost their steadiness. Clarissa tried to lift her sword. Simon was still frozen on the floor. You hadn’t even lost your breath. And I was still between you. Still calling out their names. You smiled at how I wouldn’t yield. You could have stopped The whole exchange. [Build] I raised my sword again. You caught it. Looked around the room. And called for lunch. [Verse 4] Your generals stepped aside. Servants entered as the doors flew wide. Apparently a tray of sandwiches Could get past them At any time. You sat us at the table. Said we’d earned a proper meal. You asked how next weekend felt. You packed us food for traveling. Said Mother would be proud. I asked you, very clearly, To explain who actually started this little bout. [Final Chorus] YOU COULD HAVE JUST LET US LEAVE You locked the doors! You drew your weapon! You insisted we proceed! When you tell her how we tried to kill you— Don’t forget to TELL HER WHY WE COULDN’T LEAVE! YOU COULD HAVE JUST LET US LEAVE! [Outro — guitar pulse; exhausted certainty]
