Why trains have no steering wheel comes down to one of the most overlooked tricks in railway engineering: train wheels aren't flat cylinders. They're cones. This is how trains turn without a single moving steering part. The conical wheel shape lets each wheelset steer itself back to the center of the track and around every curve, even though both wheels are locked to the same axle and spin at exactly the same rate. It does the job a car's differential does, using nothing but geometry.
We go back to George Stephenson's tapered wheel tread from around 1830, the roughly 1-in-20 taper still used today, and the hidden trade-off that comes with it: "hunting," the side-to-side oscillation that grows as trains get faster. Then we look at the 1998 Eschede ICE accident in Germany, where a change to wheel design had tragic consequences and permanently changed how rail wheels are inspected. Finally, we look at the TGV V150, which set the conventional train world speed record of 574.8 km/h in 2007, and the wheel engineering that made that run possible.
If you've ever watched a train glide through a bend and wondered how it stays on the rails, this is the simple shape doing all the work.
Why It Moves explains the physics and engineering behind trains, planes, ships, and everything that moves. Subscribe for more deep dives into the overlooked parts that do the heaviest lifting.
