The Camera Started Too Late | The Paitin Fields Case

David Prevatte ran into a North Carolina emergency room carrying his unconscious five-year-old niece, Paitin Fields. Hospital surveillance captured what looked like a desperate rescue. Medical staff then documented injuries they believed showed strangulation and sexual trauma. Nine years later, Prevatte is standing trial. Prosecutors allege he caused the injuries that left Paitin dying. The defense says investigators targeted the man who tried to save her and that household contact and CPR can explain important parts of the forensic evidence. This documentary follows Paitin’s final evening, the emergency drive, the hospital findings, the DNA questions, the child-witness evidence, the four-year gap between Prevatte being named a suspect and his arrest, and the competing interpretations of the same surveillance footage. David Wesley Prevatte has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder, statutory rape of a child by an adult, and statutory sexual offense with a child by an adult.
