Suzuki, arriving late to four-strokes after years of building two-stroke triples, had the advantage of watching everyone else's mistakes. The result was the GS1000. A 997cc air-cooled DOHC inline-four with the power to take on anything Kawasaki could build — wrapped, for the first time, in a chassis that actually deserved it. Riders and testers said the same thing: this was the first Japanese litre bike you could ride hard with confidence.
