In 1952, a three-year-old boy called Charles was told, in effect, what his name would be, and the man who made the decision was not his father. Prince Philip, the new Queen's husband, was forbidden to pass his own family name to his own children, and he called himself "nothing but a bloody amoeba" because of it. The courtier at the centre of it was Sir Alan "Tommy" Lascelles, private secretary to three sovereigns, a man who had spent his life deciding that the throne mattered more than the people who sat on it. The government file that records how it was done, HO 290/72, still sits in the National Archives with pages physically cut out of it. Some of the answers have been sealed for more than seventy years.
