East Croydon in the 1980s | Classic British Rail Trains & Southern Region Memories. Step back in time to East Croydon railway station during the 1980s, when British Rail ruled the rails and the railway looked, sounded and even smelled very different from today. East Croydon was already one of the busiest and most important railway stations south of London, sitting on the vital routes between London Victoria, London Bridge, Gatwick Airport, Brighton and the South Coast. Throughout the day, an incredible variety of trains passed through the station, carrying commuters into London, holidaymakers towards the coast and passengers heading for Gatwick Airport. In this nostalgic archive journey, we return to the days of British Rail blue and grey, slam-door trains, compartment stock, smoking carriages and the unmistakable clatter of traditional Southern Region electric multiple units. The railway of the 1980s was very different from the modern railway. Stations could feel darker and grubbier, trains were often noisier, doors were opened and slammed shut by passengers, and the railway still had a wonderfully old-fashioned atmosphere that had changed surprisingly little in places since earlier decades. East Croydon was a fantastic location for watching the seemingly endless procession of Southern Region electric trains. Classes such as the 4 VEP, 4 CIG, 4 BIG and other classic slam-door units were a familiar sight across the network, while longer-distance services connected London with Brighton and destinations across Sussex and the South Coast. The 1980s were also a period of enormous change for British Rail. Traditional rolling stock was gradually being replaced, new liveries began appearing and the railway was moving towards the sectorisation era that would eventually bring names such as Network SouthEast to the commuter railway. Compare the East Croydon of the 1980s with the station today and the transformation is remarkable. Modern trains, electronic information displays and a much busier railway have replaced much of the old British Rail atmosphere. But was something lost along the way?
