If we are saved by grace through faith, why did Jesus say that many people who call Him “Lord, Lord” will be turned away from the kingdom of heaven? In Matthew 7:21–23, Jesus gives a warning that has troubled Christians for centuries. These people prophesied, cast out demons, and performed wonders in His name. Yet they expected to enter the kingdom and were refused. So what did they miss? And how does this warning fit with the Bible’s teaching that salvation is a gift of grace, not something we earn through good works? In this Bible deep dive, we examine the closing section of the Sermon on the Mount and follow a surprising connection between Jesus’ words in Matthew 7 and His parable of the two sons in Matthew 21. In this study, we explore: • Why Jesus repeats the words “Lord, Lord” • The meaning of doing the will of the Father • What the two sons reveal about repentance and belief • How salvation by grace relates to obedience and good works • Why religious activity is not the same as living faith • The connection between Abraham, Moses, Samuel, Saul, and the repeated call of God • What “Abba, Father” reveals about grace and spiritual adoption • Why the gospel offers hope to those who know they have nothing to boast about We also look at the relationship between Matthew 7, John 6, Ephesians 2, James 2, Romans 10, and Galatians 4 to understand the relationship between faith, grace, and obedience. The goal is not to make you earn God's acceptance through performance, nor to dismiss Jesus' warning. It is to understand the order Scripture presents: grace comes first, and genuine faith responds. REFLECTION QUESTION: Which voice fills your prayers lately—the employee's or the child's? And is there an area where your “yes” to God needs to become action? Share your thoughts in the comments.
