A Dutch boatbuilder once had a crane roll one of his own yachts upside down while he sat inside, strapped in with a seat belt. The boat came back up. This video goes inside the yard behind it, Neptune Marine Shipbuilding in Aalst, a company that builds tugboats and dredgers, and explains how an Elling is made to right itself. We cover why a low center of gravity rules out a flybridge, what EU Category A (Ocean) actually requires, and what's in the hull: hand-laid glass with Twaron aramid layers, a fiber from the Kevlar family. We also look at the duplex stainless running gear and the powder-coated steel fuel tanks the builder defends. Then the story of three Ellings crossing the Atlantic together, where one fouled its propeller and all three finished on their wing engines with about 20 gallons left, followed by the E6 numbers and the honest flaws.
