It is no exaggeration to say that modern Japan was dug up from the depths of Chikuho. Yet few people today wonder why the coal lay here at all. Mt. Hasegayama, which straddles the city of Kama and the town of Katsuragawa, holds the answer beneath one's feet. From a distance it is just an ordinary village hill. But look down at the soil, and the mountain's past begins to surface. Deep below lie metamorphic rock and granite from the Paleozoic to the Mesozoic, and upon them, some fifty to forty million years ago, in the Paleogene, sand and mud settled quietly. They hardened into sandstone and shale, in the very age of the wetlands that nurtured coal. The weathered granite became masa soil, which crumbles softly under a boot sole. Over long years, wind and rain wore down this mountain's edges until its form grew gentle. There was once a castle on this mountain: Hasegayama Castle, said to have been built in the Muromachi era by Ouchi Moriharu. Chikuho connects to Hakata and to Buzen, and for anyone seeking to hold the highways, it was a place impossible to overlook. A castle is built where the view is good, but it is also where one watches the comings and goings of people. In the Sengoku period, the Akizuki clan placed branch castles on the surrounding mountains and wove a net to defend their domain. These came to be called the "Twenty-Four Castles of Akizuki." Hasegayama Castle was one mesh in that net. What survives in memory is the great castle, the great battle, the men with great names. Yet a main castle can function as a castle only because branch castles exist. In each small, nameless castle, nameless soldiers stood guard. History moved by the accumulation of such people. The summit is said to be the site of the main enclosure, and along the ridge, moats and earthen ramparts remain. I looked down into the floor of a grass-covered trench. Someone once held a spear here, holding their breath. At the thought, I seemed to hear a breath from across the centuries, close beside my ear. The copper pheasant, or yamadori, is a species native only to Japan, living in the forests of Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu. The male has a long tail and easily exceeds one meter in length. It is wary, and on sensing a person it vanishes into the thicket. But on Hasegayama there is one called Dolly. She appears on the trail, walks alongside hikers, and follows them nearly to the summit. Scientifically, it is probably a kind of threat display, driving off an intruder in her territory. To human eyes, however, it looks endearing. People see in others what they wish to see. Dolly surely has no intention of guiding anyone. She is only watching those who have entered her mountain. But those who are watched cannot help feeling warmth in it. 00:00 オープニング・登山口 01:40 長谷寺(名刹)へお参り 03:04 登山道へ・山頂を目指して 04:55 ヤマドリの「ドリーちゃん」登場! 10:06 長谷山 山頂・憩いの広場へ到着 12:15 長谷城址の歴史と絶景 13:58 山頂周辺を散策・展望 18:00 下山開始・見送りに来てくれたドリーちゃん 21:18 ドリーちゃんとのお別れ 28:25 無事下山・長谷寺へお礼参り 30:35 エンディング #長谷山 #九州山歩 #筑豊 #低山歩き #山城 #秋月二十四城 #ヤマドリ #Haseyama #Kyushu #Fukuoka #Chikuho #JapaneseCastle #CopperPheasant #8k Song: Tobu & Itro - Fantasy 🎵 Free DL / stream: http://tobu.io 🔗 Tobu: http://youtube.com 🔗 Itro: http://facebook.com Song: Razihel - Love U [NCS Release] Music provided by NoCopyrightSounds.
