FLOATING RIVERS - Mob Mahel

There are no floating islands. No rivers are falling through the clouds. No cities are suspended above the horizon. No violet twilight surrounds the inhabitants, and no music is traveling through the air. None of it exists physically. FLOATING RIVERS is a shared sensory construct delivered directly into human perception. Image, sound, temperature, movement, touch and emotion are generated within the mind with enough precision that physical reality has become unnecessary. Humanity did not enter this condition by force. It arrived through a long sequence of reasonable concessions. Interfaces began by correcting damaged bodies and regulating pain. Then they improved sleep, attention and emotional stability. Eventually, they learned to anticipate desire, suppress distress and replace imperfect experiences with better ones. At some point, the interface stopped helping humans interpret reality. It began providing reality. The inhabitants believe they are standing together before an impossible horizon. Their presence may be synchronized, but the paradise each person experiences is being rendered privately inside the nervous system. Even the happiness they share is calibrated—intense enough to feel transcendent, temporary enough to remain desirable. Its volatility is intentional. Permanent happiness would become ordinary. Happiness that repeatedly approaches perfection and then dissolves produces longing, attention and return. The entity does not need to control the physical world. It controls the evidence through which a world is believed. The rivers are not falling. The music is not playing. The sunset is not happening.
