POZZUOLI, ITALY, August 24, 2026 — Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology has published recalculated measurements from the permanent satellite-positioning network buried around the Campi Flegrei caldera, confirming that the ground physically moved during the magnitude 4.7 earthquake of July 31 — the strongest event ever recorded at this volcano, and the strongest in Campania in roughly forty years.
Stations across the central caldera stepped about 1 cm to the southwest. One station — RITE, at Rione Terra in Pozzuoli, sitting on the point of maximum deformation — stepped roughly 3 cm to the south-southwest, alongside an average vertical drop of 1 to 2 cm. Three weeks on, 3,627 people remain displaced, 215 buildings are uninhabitable, and the evacuation-order count is still climbing.
Then there is the single line in the bulletin that almost nobody noticed — the one reporting what the ground did next.
