Highlights of Reykjavík, Iceland

• We arrived in Reykjavík the following morning from Ísafjörður and set out by coach toward the magnificent Seljalandsfoss Waterfall, one of the most iconic sights along Iceland’s South Coast. Although it is possible to walk behind the cascading falls — something we chose not to do — the waterfall was nonetheless an absolutely breathtaking spectacle, surrounded by dramatic scenery and mist-filled air. • Our journey then continued to the world-famous black sand beach of Reynisfjara, a striking landscape shaped by cooled volcanic lava that was gradually broken down by the relentless waves of the Atlantic Ocean. The beach is renowned for its towering basalt columns, the fascinating Hálsanefshellir Cave, the imposing Reynisdrangar sea stacks rising from the ocean, and the powerful crashing surf along the shoreline. The dark grey to jet-black pebbled sands created an otherworldly scene unlike anything we had seen before — a truly unforgettable sight and undoubtedly the inspiration behind the beach’s name. • Next, we visited Skógafoss, another of Iceland’s most iconic and powerful waterfalls. Cascading 60 meters (197 feet) over ancient sea cliffs along the Skógá River. Skógafoss is celebrated for its immense force and the beautiful rainbows that often appear within its heavy mist, creating a spectacular natural scene. • After enjoying lunch at a local restaurant, we continued on to the Lava Center, where we explored its impressive high-tech interactive exhibits showcasing Iceland’s volcanic activity and geological wonders. The experience provided fascinating insight into the immense natural forces that have shaped this remarkable island nation.
