In this episode of 31 days of rewatching our favorite black cinema, we’re revisiting Regina Grier from The Steve Harvey Show and talking about why she still stands out.
Before Abbott Elementary, Regina was already giving us a polished, successful, feminine Black woman running a school, setting standards, and carrying herself with confidence. She represented a version of grown Black womanhood that felt aspirational, funny, stylish, and fully formed.
Regina could be the principal, the love interest, the classy one in the room, and still get pulled back into the “Piggy” nickname and jokes about who she used to be.
So today we’re talking about what Regina Grier represented and why I LOVE her so much despite the Miss Piggy joke.
