Your practice swing is smooth, balanced and easy. Then you step up to the ball and the real one comes out tight, quick and fat. You did not forget how to swing in three seconds. In this video I show you why, to your body, the swing without a ball and the swing with a ball are not the same job, and four small changes that let your real swing borrow what your practice swing already does.
In this video:
• What a 2014 study in the International Journal of Golf Science found when it compared practice swings and real swings
• Piece 1 — Give the practice swing a job: a target, a spot and the speed you will really use (and the swish test)
• Piece 2 — The gap between the rehearsal and the ball: the think box and play box from Vision54, the program Pia Nilsson and Lynn Marriott built
• Piece 3 — Soft hands: what Maja Stark said she did with her club before she hit on her way to the 2025 U.S. Women's Open
• Piece 4 — Stop hitting at the ball: a spot in front of it, and what the research says for higher handicaps
• A version for a stiff back or shoulder, plus something to do tonight in a doorway
• The final key: a target big enough to hold your normal spread
Everything I teach here, written down properly — four books in one library:

PLEASE NOTE:
• No distance or score gain is promised. Matching your real swing to your rehearsal may cost a few yards if you used to swing much harder at the ball.
• A routine does not cure nerves, anxiety or the yips. This is about habit and attention, not psychological treatment.
• Work within a comfortable range of motion and never force a position that hurts. If you have back, hip, knee, shoulder or wrist trouble, ask your doctor before practising. Nothing in this video is medical advice.
• All numbers come from the sources named in the video (International Journal of Golf Science, GOLF.com, Practical Golf, Mark Broadie, the Associated Press, ESPN). Your own results will be different.

Tell me in the comments with one word: when you tried the swish test, was the swish loudest BEFORE your spot or AFTER it?
