Tilly Willy Bridge — Dawn Shipp
There’s an old bridge south of Fayetteville, Arkansas, where the locals say you should never stop on Halloween night.
According to legend, a mother and her baby were swept away by floodwaters beneath Tilly Willy Bridge. Some say that on Halloween, the creek begins to run backward, the water bubbles, and a woman rises from the depths, searching for the child she lost.
And if you stop your car on the bridge?
They say your engine won’t start. And you might find handprints where there shouldn’t be any.
The original Tilly Willy Bridge is gone now, replaced by a newer crossing.
Whether you believe the legend or not, Tilly Willy Bridge has left its mark on Northwest Arkansas folklore.
Part of Haint Tails, a collection of Ozark folklore, family stories, and unexplained encounters.
Some roads are meant to be crossed. Not stopped upon.
