Is Congress's Political Culture Dynastic? The Modi, Narasimha Rao and Manmohan Singh Debate

Why does Congress repeatedly target Prime Minister Narendra Modi with personal remarks? Is it merely political rivalry, or does it reflect a deeper conflict between dynastic politics and leaders who rise from ordinary backgrounds? From Mani Shankar Aiyar's controversial 'Chaiwala' and 'Neech' remarks to Mallikarjun Kharge's 'Ravana', 'poisonous snake' and latest 'Modi ka baap' controversy, Congress leaders have repeatedly faced criticism over their language towards PM Modi. But the debate goes beyond Narendra Modi. How did Congress treat former Prime Ministers Lal Bahadur Shastri, P. V. Narasimha Rao and Manmohan Singh? Why was Narasimha Rao marginalised within his own party? And what did Rahul Gandhi's public rejection of an ordinance approved by the Manmohan Singh government reveal about the relationship between the Prime Minister and the Congress high command? In this Organiser special, we examine the history of controversial political remarks, the Gandhi family's influence within Congress and the questions surrounding the treatment of leaders outside the political dynasty.
