Two households, both alike in dignity, in fair Verona. Three civil brawls have disturbed the quiet of the streets, and the Prince warns the Montagues and the Capulets: "If ever you disturb our streets again, your lives shall pay the forfeit of the peace." Romeo, Montague's only son, is lovesick for the fair Rosaline. That night he goes masked to the Capulets' feast, and there he sees Juliet. Listen to William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet as a full-cast English audiobook: Romeo, Juliet, the Nurse, Mercutio, Benvolio, Tybalt, Friar Lawrence, Capulet, Lady Capulet, the Chorus and every other speaking part each keep one consistent voice from the first line to the last, and a separate narrator reads the act and scene headings and the stage directions. Beneath Juliet's window, Romeo hears her say, "O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo?" Before he leaves the Capulets' orchard they have exchanged their vows, and at dawn Friar Lawrence agrees to help, hoping the match may turn the two households' rancour to pure love. English subtitles appear on screen with the name of each speaker, and English captions (CC) are available too. Narration: AI voices (British English), one fixed voice per speaker.
