Roggenflue-Alt Falkenstein-Thalbrücke Balsthal Naturpark Thal Switzerland Descend Special Path & Fantastic View: https://s.geo.admin.ch/qcjx9cegvhpu
The hike from the Thalbrücke stop in Balsthal via Alt Falkenstein Castle to the Roggenflue is a popular and varied mountain hike in the Thal Nature Park (Canton of Solothurn) with magnificent views across the valley to the Alps.
Route Overview & Key Data
• Starting point: “Balsthal, Thalbrücke” bus stop / Restaurant Burg
• Destination: Roggenflue (summit at 998 m above sea level)
• Duration: approx. 2.5 to 3.5 hours (depending on route and breaks)
• Elevation gain: approx. 510 to 650 meters (ascent and descent)
• Difficulty: Moderate technical difficulty (T2 to T3; steep, exposed ascent over the Chluser Roggen with stairs and chain handrails; an easier alternative via P.773 is also possible)
• Season: Recommended from April through October.
Route & Highlights
1. Start at the Thal Bridge: The tour begins at the “Balsthal, Thalbrücke” stop at the foot of the Klus.
2. Past Alt Falkenstein Castle: The trail leads directly past the historic Alt Falkenstein Castle toward Felsriegel.
3. Ascent via the Chluser Roggen: A steep, narrow ridge trail (rated T3 in places, secured with chains and steps) winds its way upward. Those who prefer an easier route (T2) can take the alternative path via emergency exit point P.773.
4. On the ridge toward the Roggenflue: Along the ridge, you’ll enjoy impressive views down into the valley before reaching the summit of the Roggenflue (998 m), with views stretching all the way to the Alps.
5. Refreshments & Descent: For a break, we recommend the nearby Roggen mountain restaurant before beginning the descent (e.g., via Roggenschnarz or Oensinger Roggen).
