Keeper's note, written late: 🌊🔥 No moon tonight, and no rain either — only the swell. It began coming in a little after dark, long slow lines out of the Atlantic, and it has not stopped since: each one lifts, rolls in under the cliff, and breaks white along the rocks below us, and by the time the foam has drawn back the next is already on its way. From the big window you can follow the whole cove by that white alone — the water churning round the sea stacks, pouring through the rock arch, the sea black beyond it and the far cliffs gone to haze. I left the one pane on the left open a hand's width, so the sound of it comes up into the room — nothing else does. Then I built the fire up on the big stone hearth, lit the lantern on the window sill beside the old jug, and sat and watched the sea count for a while, because that seemed to be all the evening asked. On tonight: slow Celtic folk for close on four and a half hours, instrumental from the first note to the last, and kept to one unhurried pace throughout — softly plucked acoustic strings over a deep open drone, with long rests between the phrases. This time the tunes sit a step lower than usual, down in a warm, deep register, to keep company with the swell. Under the music there are only two other sounds: the fire on the hearth, and the sea coming faintly up through the open window. No rain, no wind, and no change of mood from start to finish. Your corner: the leather armchair under the window, with a tartan blanket thrown over its back. On the small table beside it a lantern is lit, and a measure of whisky has been poured and left where your hand will find it. Across from you the big stone hearth is burning bright over a deep bed of embers, the copper kettle warming at its side, and further back a single table waits by the corner bar, the bottles on the shelves holding the firelight. Turn your head and the window has the sea in it — and, floating on the glass, the fire and the lanterns too; turn it back and there is only the fire. Both will still be there whenever you look. A night for: resting, first and last — sitting still with a warm glass and nothing that needs doing, letting your breathing fall in with the swell, reading in the chair while the fire does its work, slow and quiet study, or sleep when it comes, with the sea keeping time below the window. — The Keeper, Firelit Tavern There is a page like this in the book every couple of nights.
