Everyone Laughed When China Tried to Farm Salt Land… Now It Feeds Millions

China tried to farm salt land that looked like a field of snow, and the experts laughed. In the Yellow River Delta around Dongying, the ground is crusted white, it cracks under your boots, and for generations almost nothing grew there. Then, in 2016, an 86-year-old Yuan Longping, the father of hybrid rice, put his whole reputation on growing rice in it. The headlines called it "seawater rice." That one phrase made it sound like magic to the fans and like a stunt to the critics, and it hid what was really going on. In this video I walk through what that first harvest actually showed, why rice normally dies of thirst in salty ground, and why the plant is only half the story. So was the laughter right, or did it miss the point entirely? And why might a problem China chose to fight on purpose soon be showing up on coastlines far from Asia? Watch to the end before you decide. Figures on yields, planted area and targets come from Chinese official and research reporting, they vary from site to site, and they may change over time. Tell me in the comments where you're watching from, and subscribe if you want the next story about how Asia feeds itself.
