Tactical professionals need to be able to move over terrain. Whether that's a military member climbing over elevation with all of his gear, or a firefighter maneuvering through levels of a structure.
Sometimes, your legs may give out before your cardio does.
That's why we train Ascent Conditioning as part of our overall endurance and work capacity plan.
Here's one session from Warfighter:
8-minute AMRAP
Box step-ups, continuous, 20 lb weighted vest
Every 2:00 — 25-yard plate pinch farmer's carry + 5 no-push-up burpees
Score: total step-ups accumulated
The pace is steady (think like a manual labor output). Ben stayed conversational the whole way through. That's the target for this block.
WHY BOX STEP-UPS
Builds localized muscular endurance in the legs - the thing that fails on terrain even when your aerobic base is fine
Minimal space, minimal equipment
Low impact compared to running hills
Real single-leg work, which most programs skip in favor of bilateral squat patterns
Controlled step-down trains the eccentric and keeps load off the Achilles
BOX HEIGHT
Start mid-shin. Most people land between 12 and 16 inches. Shorter athletes start lower. If the stride is long, the box is too tall.
PROGRESSIONS
Phase 1 — straight-ahead step-ups
Phase 2 — lateral step-up and over
Phase 3 — crossover step over
You don't cover terrain in a straight line. You side-step up grades and cross over deadfall. The progressions train that in a controlled setting.
HOW TO PROGRAM IT
One to two days a week. Not five.
Progress by adding time or adding weight. Not both in the same week.
The most common mistake is too much weight, too soon.
WHO THIS IS FOR
Military, law enforcement, structural and wildland fire, hunters, hikers - anyone who covers terrain or stairs under load. Ascent conditioning belongs in any tactical athlete's week.
GEAR IN THIS VIDEO
Tally counter - tracking step-ups in your head doesn't work past round one
Weighted vest (20 lb)
30" plyo box
Bumper plates for the pinch carry
