Clinical can be one of the best parts of nursing school, but it can also be one of the hardest. I’ve had clinical shifts where I felt unwanted, discouraged, anxious, and questioned whether I was good enough to become a nurse. I’ve sat in my car before clinical thinking, How am I going to get through the next 12 hours?
But one bad clinical shift does not define the nurse you will become. 🤍
You are a student. You are supposed to be learning. You are not walking into the hospital because you already know everything but you are walking in because you are becoming someone who will know more with every experience.
I made this video for the nursing student who feels anxious the night before clinical, who has been embarrassed for not knowing an answer, who has felt unwanted by a nurse, who compares themselves to experienced nurses, or who has ever gone home questioning whether nursing is really for them.
One thing I’ve learned is that confidence does not mean, “I know everything.” Confidence means, “Whatever happens today, I trust myself to ask for help, learn, recover, and keep going.”
If you have clinical tomorrow and you’re nervous tonight, you don’t need to walk into that hospital fearless. Walk in nervous if you have to. Just walk in. Your goal is not to impress everyone on that floor. Your goal is to leave knowing one thing you didn’t know before one medication, one disease process, one assessment finding, one communication technique, or one lesson about yourself.
Sometimes our worst clinical experiences also teach us the kind of nurse we never want to become. One day, when a nervous nursing student is assigned to you, remember how you felt. Be the nurse who says, “Come with me. Let me show you.” 🩺🤍
I also share a little about my own journey from dreaming about becoming a nurse while I was still in Nepal, preparing for TOEFL and SAT, to now getting closer to finishing nursing school in the United States. Sometimes we become so focused on how far we still have to go that we forget we are living inside something we once prayed for.
So if nursing school feels heavy right now, remember:
A bad day is not a bad future.
A wrong answer does not mean you are stupid.
Being nervous does not mean you are incapable.
You are learning. You are growing. You are becoming.
Keep showing up. One patient, one question, one mistake, one lesson, and one clinical at a time. 🤍
