Yamato's final sortie ended in less than two hours. On April 7, 1945, the largest battleship ever built was sunk by American carrier aircraft while steaming toward Okinawa without a single fighter overhead. The Imperial Japanese Navy would never again send a battleship to sea.
This documentary follows Operation Ten-Go from the keel of Yamato at Kure to the three waves of Task Force 58 aircraft that ended her. It covers the sister ship Musashi, the redesigned Mark 13 torpedo, the Avenger and Helldiver squadrons, the port-side attack that overwhelmed her counter-flooding, and the loss of the cruiser Yahagi and four destroyers.
Every figure comes from after-action reports, loss tables, and ship records, not from legend. This is the record of how the gun lost its four-hundred-year reign in a single afternoon.
