The Namakam is a river of salutations to Shiva in his every form, the fierce and the gentle, the seen and the unseen, present in the forest and the field, the weapon and the healer. To sit with it is to let the whole of creation become an offering of namah. The most powerful, the highest among all Vedic hymns, the unsurpassed crown jewel of Vedas, the thunderous heart of Rudra worship, the most ancient hymn invoking Rudra where Vedic praise rises to its fiercest and most sacred heights. It is here that two of the greatest Rudra mantras are contained: the Panchakshari Mahamantra, hidden in the 8th anuvaka, and the Mahamrtyunjaya Mantra in the last anuvaka.
