A young cowboy with no experience of frontier warfare is taken on by the army's legendary chief of scouts, a hard old man who teaches him to read sign, live off the desert and think like the warriors they're hunting. The pupil becomes the finest tracker on the frontier — and it is his word, given in good faith to the most wanted man in the Southwest, that finally ends the long Apache campaign. But the officers who take the credit feel no obligation to honour a scout's promise, and he walks away from the army with the taste of it in his mouth. Fifteen years later the frontier is closing, the territories want statehood, and the same skills that made him valuable have become an embarrassment.
