“We give thanks to God and the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you.” (Col 1:3) When we think about the people we are thankful for, we often remember the things they have done that we could see: bringing a meal when we were sick, calling when we were discouraged, or sitting beside us through a difficult season. But there is another way people show their love that we may not always see. They pray for us. I am thankful for the people who pray for me. Some have told me they are praying, and I know the care behind their words. Others may be bringing my name before the Lord without my ever knowing it. Both are precious gifts. Paul gives us a beautiful example of this kind of care when he writes, “We give thanks to God and the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you” (Colossians 1:3). Paul was thankful for these believers, and his gratitude was expressed through prayer. His example reminds us that prayer is not simply something we do when there is nothing else we can do. Prayer is one of the ways we love and care for others, bringing them before the One who knows exactly what they need. There are seasons when prayer comes easily and others when grief, fear, disappointment, or exhaustion make it difficult to find the words. Sometimes all we can manage is, “Lord, help me.” During those times, what a comfort it can be to know someone else is praying for us. A simple message saying, “You were on my heart today, and I prayed for you,” can remind us that we are not walking through our difficulties alone. We may never know every person who has prayed for us. We may never know the times someone whispered our name before the Lord, asked Him to strengthen us, or prayed for us when we did not even realize we needed prayer. Neither will we always see how God answers those prayers. Prayer does not guarantee that every circumstance will change the way we hope. Rather, it is the privilege of bringing one another before our heavenly Father and trusting His wisdom, goodness, and perfect will. It is easy to take faithful people for granted, especially those who have prayed for us for many years. When someone tells us they are praying, perhaps we should pause and thank them. “Thank you for remembering me in your prayers.” “Your prayers have meant more to me than you know.” Those are simple words, but they can encourage someone who has faithfully carried our needs before the Lord. And to those who have prayed for me, thank you. Whether you told me you were praying or prayed quietly without my knowing, I am grateful for your love, faithfulness, and care. Whose Name Am I Carrying? Being thankful for those who pray for us should also cause us to consider another question: Whose name am I faithfully carrying before the Lord? Perhaps it is a child or grandchild, a spouse, parent, friend, pastor, or someone in our church family. Maybe it is someone who is sick, grieving, weary, facing a difficult decision, struggling in their faith, or someone who does not yet know Jesus Christ as Savior. We do not have to know how to solve another person's problem before we pray. We can bring them to the One who does. When we tell someone, “I'll pray for you,” let us make every effort to follow through. We can pray immediately, write down their name, or bring them before the Lord whenever He brings them to mind. We may not be able to change their circumstances, but we can faithfully carry them to God. At Thanksgiving, we count our blessings: family, friends, food, home, and God's provision. This year, let us also thank Him for the people who carry our names in prayer. Some prayers we know about. Others may have been offered quietly where only God heard them. And as we thank Him for those who pray for us, may we ask Him to make us people who faithfully pray for others. Heavenly Father, thank You for the people who pray for me, both those who have told me and those whose prayers I may never know about. Thank You for their love and faithfulness in bringing my needs before You. Forgive me for the times I have taken their prayers for granted, and help me express my gratitude to them. Lord, teach me to pray faithfully for others. Put people on my heart and help me follow through when I say, “I'll pray for you.” Give comfort to those who are hurting, wisdom to those facing decisions, and strength to those who are weary. Draw those who have wandered back to You, and open the hearts of those who do not yet know Jesus Christ. Thank You for the privilege of prayer and for those who faithfully carry my name before You. Help me faithfully carry someone else's. I pray all of this in the perfect and precious name of my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen. I am thankful for the people whose prayers I know about and for those who may be praying for me quietly. To each of you who has prayed for me, thank you. This Thanksgiving, I thank God for you, and I pray that I will be just as faithful in carrying others before Him.
