To the northwest of Beijing lies a valley that has served as a vital link between the regions inside and outside the Great Wall since ancient times. It is a place of rolling peaks and encircling mountains. Nestled within this valley stands a magnificent ancient fortress: Juyong Pass. If the Great Wall is a giant dragon spanning northern China, then Juyong Pass is a crucial gateway through which that dragon guards Beijing. It is at once a Great Wall pass, a military stronghold with a history spanning a millennium, and a cultural heritage site that harmoniously blends natural landscapes, military architecture, religious art, and historical transportation routes. Today, let us journey to Changping District in Beijing to explore the gates, walls, and valley of Juyong Pass, seeking to decipher the historical secrets left behind by this majestic ancient stronghold. Located approximately 50 kilometers from downtown Beijing in the Nankou Town area of Changping District, the existing fortress complex dates primarily to the Ming Dynasty; its walls, watchtowers, defensive platforms, and water gates combine to form a comprehensive military defense system. At its center stands the Yuntai (Cloud Platform), an exceptionally precious relic featuring stone carvings from the Yuan Dynasty. Every brick, every section of the wall, and every stone carving here tells a story of ancient Chinese dynasties—stories of northern transportation routes, military defense, and cultural exchange among ethnic groups.
