On This Day in Jazz History… On September 2, 1928, Horace Ward Martin Tavares Silver was born in Norwalk, Connecticut. His father, born John Tavares Silva on the Cape Verdean island of Maio, played the old island melodies by ear at home. By the mid-1940s, Silver was a working nightclub pianist in Hartford. In 1950, his trio backed Stan Getz at the Sundown Club. Getz liked what he heard and hired all three for the road. On December 10, 1950, Silver made his first recording session with Getz's quartet. After about a year, Silver left the band and freelanced in New York. He built a reputation there quickly. Blue Note recorded his trio in 1952; he co-founded the Jazz Messengers with Art Blakey in the mid-1950s, and the quintet he led afterward became a model for hard bop groups.
