Camino de Santiago - The Frances
Day 8 (10th of May)
Villatuerta to Los Arcos - 25km
This morning we left from our accommodation in Villatuerta at 6.30am heading to the town of Estella where we hoped to get breakfast. After walking through the whole town, we just about gave up on having breakfast when we spotted a cafe just off the track. It was the first cafe on the entire route offering a protein breakfast - happy days 😊.
Estella has a number of historically significant buildings, a day visit would have been ideal to take it all in.
On route to Azqueta, we passed the famous wine fountain “Fuente de Vino”. Wine on the left and water on the right coming out of the wall. The wine is sponsored by the nearby Irache wineries, they provide 100 liters of wine each day for the pilgrims passing by for strength and vitality on their journey to Santiago.
Today’s route was quite scenic again - this part of Navarra is known for their vineyards and we passed quite a few on route to Los Arcos.
The steady 13km incline to Villamayor de Monjardin was quite challenging, with the rest of the route to Los Arcos mostly on a descend. It was a long and dusty road, with hardly and trees. We were lucky that most of the day was overcast to save us from the hot sun. We had a few drops of rain and the wind was really cold in some places.
We arrived at Los Arcos just after 4pm and a local arranged for our hotel to pick us up in town (our accommodation is about 2km out of town off route). They will drop us back to the town again tomorrow to resume where we left off.
PS. The quality of the first clip in the video is not that good due to bad light that early in the morning 🫣.
