In a small town in the north of the Czech Republic, families still live inside the same long brick barracks where tens of thousands of people once waited to be sent to their deaths. Between 1941 and 1945, around 140,000 Jewish men, women, and children passed through this town, and about 33,000 died here, within sight of flower beds and a bandstand. The Nazis called it a gift, and made a film about it with a mocking title: The Führer Gives the Jews a City.
