Fished the Gallatin River in Montana with a new kit rod I'd never used. First fish was a German brown, and he bit the fly, not the nymph.
The nymph was making my grasshopper sink, so I took it off. Got a rainbow as soon as the fly went back out. Buddy crossed the river on his own to come find me. Both fish went back. I've got plenty in the fridge for eating.
The rod's a Cortland Fair Play kit from Walmart, 5/6 weight, 8 foot, 60 bucks. The reel is a little plasticky. It caught fish the first day.
Moved to a second spot and got another rainbow on a lure. Then went up a side road looking for camping and hiked down to a small creek I don't think gets fished at all. Wanted something at least eight inches. Hooked one, but it stayed under the camera.
Found a dispersed spot in Big Sky. Cooked yesterday's trout and rice on the Coleman 425 my grandpa got at a yard sale, the one I fixed. Buddy got a whole trout.
