In today’s edition of Sounds From Afar, Felix Appiah takes aim at the political praise surrounding President John Mahama’s recent presentation of two new ambulances to the Ghana Police Hospital during the commissioning of a new 85-bed ward complex. Ghana News Agency
Felix argues that the level of celebration from some NDC supporters is excessive and describes it as mediocre politics, especially when compared with the previous NPP administration’s large-scale ambulance procurement programme.
Under former President Nana Akufo-Addo, the government commissioned 307 ambulances for the National Ambulance Service under the One Constituency One Ambulance initiative. The National Ambulance Service has recently confirmed that those 307 vehicles were procured in 2020, although some are now undergoing repairs or have suffered wear and tear after years of operation. Felix’s argument is that government should certainly be credited for providing equipment that improves emergency care, but political communicators should keep such achievements in perspective rather than presenting every government intervention as extraordinary.
The discussion also revisits an interesting political contrast: in 2020, then-candidate John Mahama criticized the fanfare surrounding the Akufo-Addo government’s commissioning of more than 300 ambulances. Ghana News Online
Is Felix right that the political celebration is overdone, or should every improvement in police healthcare be acknowledged regardless of the number of ambulances involved?
