Diamond Ring - is the story of a woman recovering from a minor stroke with the help of a little dog she is foster-caring for her son's betrothed, Anna. The engagement falls out - the engagement ring - the diamond ring- comes back home. About the author: Amanpal Sara (2 August 1957 – 17 January 2023) was a Punjabi Canadian short-story writer, poet, theatre practitioner, film artist and community activist. A rationalist associated with progressive literary and cultural circles, he contributed to Punjabi literature and theatre in Canada while maintaining close ties with his home village of Bambeli, near Mahilpur in Punjab’s Hoshiarpur district. Sara completed his BSc at Government College, Hoshiarpur, in 1976 and moved to Canada that year. After returning to India in 1979, he moved back to Canada in 1980. He married Sukhjinder Kaur Shergill, and they had two sons, Azad Pal and Suraj Pal. Although he made his home in Canada, he continued to visit Punjab and remained involved in the life of his birthplace. Over a literary career spanning nearly three decades, Sara published three short-story collections: ਸਰਦ ਰਿਸ਼ਤੇ (1993), ਵੀਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਨੋਟ (2000) and ਡਾਇਮੰਡ ਰਿੰਗ (Diamond Ring, 2006). His poetry collection, ਦੋ ਮਾਂਵਾਂ ਦਾ ਪੁੱਤਰ, appeared in 1999. His fiction engaged with social concerns and human relationships. His story “ਵੀਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਨੋਟ,” published in the July–September 1996 issue of the literary magazine ਸਿਰਜਣਾ, brought him particular recognition and helped establish his reputation as a Punjabi short-story writer. Theatre was another important part of his creative life. He joined Vancouver Sath in 1984 and contributed both as an actor and through production work. He participated in numerous Punjabi and English-language productions, including ਪਿਕਟ ਲਾਈਨ, ਜ਼ਹਿਰ ਦੀ ਫਸਲ and ਤੂਤਾਂ ਵਾਲਾ ਖੂਹ. These plays reached audiences in cities and provinces across Canada, contributing to the growth of Punjabi theatre beyond Punjab. When the literary magazine ਵਤਨ began in 1989, Sara became involved in its editorial and administrative work, continuing until 1995. During this period, he also translated Lala Har Dayal’s essay “Comparative Religion” into Punjabi under the title ਤੁਲਨਾਤਮਕ ਧਰਮ. His wider cultural work included contributions to Vancouver Sath’s magazine ਅੰਕੁਰ and active participation in Punjabi Lekhak Manch. Sara’s creative interests extended to cinema. His films included ਉਹਲਾ, in which he appeared alongside Rama Vij, and ਗੁਲਦਸਤਾ, which he made in 2001. His commitment to community life also reached back to Punjab. He and his family supported improvements at the government school in Bambeli, reflecting an enduring connection with the village and a commitment to education. In his later years, Parkinson’s disease increasingly limited his ability to write and participate in literary and cultural activities. He died on 17 January 2023. His published work, theatre productions and contributions to cultural institutions form a lasting part of Punjabi literary and community life in Canada.
