Brahim Tayeb is a highly respected Kabyle singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist born on March 16, 1966, in Larbaâ Nath Irathen, Tizi Ouzou, Algeria. Shortly after his birth, he suffered an illness that caused him to completely lose his sight. Despite this early hardship, his family supported his academic and musical development. He attended the El Achour school for the blind in Algiers, where he learned to read musical braille and mastered both the guitar and the oud (luth). Proving his academic dedication, he later graduated from the University of Algiers with a degree in translation and interpretation. Tayeb's career and rise to prominence began during a politically volatile period in Algeria during the late 1980s, when choosing a career in the arts was exceptionally difficult. He launched his official musical journey with his debut album, Ussan nni (Those Days), released in 1989. His unique musical style blended Western arrangements, North African rhythms and traditional Arabic taqasim, immediately setting him apart. He grew a massive and loyal audience, earning a reputation for his gentle vocals, complex poetic structures, and high-quality arrangements. Over the decades, Brahim Tayeb solidified his place in Kabyle cultural history by channeling themes of love, societal hardship, exile and Berber identity through his music. His extensive discography includes landmark albums like Ḥemmleɣ-kem (1993), Seṛɣ-iten (1996) and Siɣ-d itran-ik (2017), alongside timeless hit singles such as "Intas" and "Tikhras". Recognized as both an accomplished activist and a musical bridge between Algeria and the diaspora, he continues to perform on prestigious international stages, standing as a symbol of resilience who turned physical darkness into enduring artistic light.
